Account and sign-in
Reset a forgotten password, verify your email address, understand a blocked or deleted account, choose the language of account emails, and know which security emails Areca sends you.
Areca sends a few emails to your own address about your account. This page covers how to reset a forgotten password, how to verify your email address, which language the emails use, and which security notices you always get.
Account emails are sent whether or not your address is verified. You can't turn them off.
Forgot your password
On the sign-in page, select Forgot password? next to the password field. Enter your email address, then send the request.
Areca shows the same message whether or not an account exists for that address. It says that, if the account exists, a link was sent.
Open the email. The link works for 1 hour, and only once.
Enter a new password. Use at least 8 characters, and enter it again to confirm.
Sign in again. Areca confirms the change. Sign in with the new password.
A few things to know:
- Every device is signed out. A reset ends every session on every device, not only the one you use. Sign in again on each device.
- Two-factor is still asked. If two-factor authentication is on, Areca asks for your code at your next sign-in. A reset does not turn it off.
- There is a limit. You can request 3 reset links per hour for each email address. Areca also allows 3 requests per hour from each network address. After that, Areca asks you to wait before you try again.
- Expired links. If the link has expired or was already used, the page says This link has expired or was already used. Request a new one from the forgot password page.
Sign-in with Microsoft or Google
If your account signs in only with Microsoft or Google, it has no password to reset. Areca sends an email instead. It says which provider to use, and links to the sign-in page. No reset link is sent.
When the link is not available
If the page says Ask an agency admin to send you a reset link, Areca can't send the email from that page. Ask an agency admin. They can send you a link from Agency › People. See people and invitations.
If your installation has no mail server, nobody can send a reset link until one is set up. If password sign-in is turned off, the sign-in page has no Forgot password? link.
Verify your email
Areca asks you to verify your email address. Until you do, the CMS shows a Verify your email banner. The banner does not stop you from working.
Send the email. Select Send verification email in the banner.
Open the link. The link is valid for 24 hours. Areca opens the CMS and shows Email verified.
A few things to know:
- You can send up to 3 verification emails per hour.
- You can dismiss the banner. Areca remembers that in the browser you used, so the banner can show again on another computer.
- If you joined through an invitation that Areca emailed to you, your address counts as verified. You don't need to verify it again.
- If the first admin account is created during setup and a mail server is set up, Areca sends that admin a verification email.
If your account is blocked
An agency admin can block an account. A blocked person can't sign in, whichever way they try: with a password, Google, Microsoft or another provider. The sign-in page says This account is blocked. Contact your agency.
Areca doesn't say why. Ask your agency admin. Your work is safe: entries, memberships and roles are kept, and everything works again once you are unblocked. Your personal AI keys and AI app connections are paused while you are blocked, and start working again after you are unblocked. You get no email about a block or an unblock.
If you were signed in when the account was blocked, you are signed out on every device.
If your account was deleted
Deleting an account is permanent. You can delete your own account from the Account page, or an agency admin can delete it. Either way, you are signed out, and the sign-in page says Your account was deleted. The account can't be signed in to again. See your account for what is removed and what stays.
Email language
Account emails are sent in English, Nederlands or Türkçe. To change the language, open Account and find the Email language section. Choose the language you want. Notification emails use the same language.
Areca sets the language once, the first time you open the CMS. It uses your interface language at that time. Changing the interface language later does not change the email language. If the language has not been set, emails are sent in English.
Notification emails
Account emails always send. Notification emails, such as a release going live or failing, are different. You choose which of them you get, in the Notifications section of Account. Your client and your agency can set defaults, and they can make some emails required.
Notification emails go only to verified addresses, so verify yours first. See notification emails for the full list, and for how to unsubscribe.
Security emails
Areca sends these emails when the change happens. You always get them, and you can't turn them off.
- Password changed. Sent after your password changes, whether you changed it or reset it. If it wasn't you, the email has a link to reset your password.
- Two-factor authentication turned on. Sent when two-factor authentication is turned on for your account.
- Two-factor authentication turned off. Sent when two-factor authentication is turned off for your account.
- Removed from a client. Sent when someone removes you from a client. It names the client and the person who removed you.
- Role changed. Sent when your role in a client changes, for example from Editor to Owner. It shows the new role.
- Added to a client. Sent when an agency admin adds you to one or more clients without an invitation. It lists the clients and links to the CMS.
- Two-factor authentication reset. Sent when an agency admin resets your two-factor setup. Sign in again and set it up if you are an agency admin.
- Account deleted. Sent when your account is deleted, by you or by an agency admin. It names who did it.
Areca does not send the removal and role-change emails for a change you made yourself. Blocking, unblocking, a change of name and signing out everywhere do not send an email.
